As democratic socialists, the fight for truly universal, single payer healthcare — one that guarantees free-at-use care to all through a single, public program — while not the be-all and end-all of healthcare justice, is a singularly powerful way to organize around a demand that will materially improve the lives of poor and working people.

Today, no socialist demand has proven more popular across sections of the American working class than this demand for a single payer healthcare system.

However, this popularity won’t be enough to win against the massive health-insurance industry, the drug companies, and the corrupt American Medical Association. Our campaign for single payer, which for us means both the New York Health Act (NYHA) as well as for Medicare for All (HR 1384), aims to bridge the gap between popularity and reality by building a mass campaign to transform our nation’s healthcare system. To win this demand, to force politicians to reject corporate money and to take the side of their constituents, will take nothing less than reaching massive numbers of working class people where they are, in their communities and in their workplaces and bringing them into a clear, concrete, and strategic organizing project.

Every little bit helps. We’re hoping to raise $5000 in the near future to cover printing and materials costs for our tabling and canvassing needs for the rest of the year. Any additional money we raise will go toward renting space for meetings, providing food to organizers and other operating costs.
